What is SCRIP, and how does it work?

The SCRIP program provides essentially “free money” to apply toward membership fees for the band and guard programs. The Parent Group purchases certificates/gift cards at a discount. The certificates/gift cards are then sold to you at face value. You then use the certificate/gift card to pay for goods and services you would normally buy anyway (or, you can give them as gifts). The difference between the face value and the discounted purchase price is applied to your child’s account for band fees.

For example, you pay $100 for a $100 gift card from Fred Meyer that can then be used to pay for $100 worth of purchases and/or gasoline. However, the Fred Meyer gift card only cost the Parent Group $96. So, the difference of $4 goes directly to your child’s account to offset the band program fees. If you buy $100 of gas per month from September to June, you can reduce your fees by $40…just by buying gasoline!

SCRIP is available from a wide variety of national and local merchants including grocers, bookstores, electronics stores, movie theaters, department stores, specialty stores, restaurants, hotels, airlines, and rental car companies. By buying SCRIP, you are essentially paying yourself to buy things you already knew you were going to purchase. It is possible to earn enough with SCRIP to cover 100% of your child’s band fees, and there is no limit to how much SCRIP you can buy during the year. Some families have never had to pay band fees for years!

There are some minor limitations: If you earn more in SCRIP profit than is owed in a season’s band fees, the profit will carry over to the next year with your child as long as he/she stays in the program. If your child leaves the band program, however, any balance of SCRIP earnings are forfeited and transferred to the band program general fund. No cash can be returned to students or their families from SCRIP purchases.

To place a SCRIP order, you have two options:

  1. Use the “Auto-Add Order Form” (above). This allows you to fill in the form on your computer and then either print it out or email it.
  2. Use the “Blank Order Form” (also above). This option requires you to print the spreadsheet and then fill in your choices.

Once you have a filled in the order form, your next step is to deliver the form and a check for the full amount purchased (made out to Westview Band SCRIP) to our SCRIP coordinator, Stacy Stricker. Stacy is available to accept SCRIP orders at the monthly parent meetings, or you can call or email her to make an appointment to drop off an order at her home. PLEASE DO NOT PUT SCRIP ORDERS IN THE BLACK BOX. Allow five days after the “orders are due by” date to pick up the SCRIP.

NOTE: The Parent Group maintains a limited inventory of the most popular SCRIP items for immediate purchase. Heading out to go grocery shopping tomorrow? You may be able to buy something we already have without having to order and wait for it!
